Is a Glass Pool Fence Right For You?

A glass fence can be a good choice for many homes, and it may have some surprising benefits for use around a pool in particular. If you need to install new pool fencing around your home's pool, your first step is to check on any local building codes or requirements from a homeowner's association, but otherwise, note some reasons why a glass pool fence might be the right choice for you.

Sealant

Glass pool fencing is often sealed with a type of polymer coating, similar to that which you might add to your vehicle's windscreen. This sealant is meant to let water run off its surface and to resist stains, mildew, and bacteria. This keeps the glass fence clear, even when splashed with pool water, and easier to clean, as you won't need to scrub nasty hard water stains from a glass pool fence as you might need to do with an indoor glass shower screen. If your home's fence will be located very close to the pool so that it may suffer some splashing, sealed or coated glass can then be the right material.

Noise and sun

Glass is a natural sound barrier, and a thick, tempered glass pool fence with no gaps between the panels might offer the most protection from sound, for you and for your neighbours! If you were to opt for a glass fence that sits close to the pool's perimeter, you might also choose the tallest fence available for your home and neighbourhood, and even add a glass roof or enclosure so that the noise in the pool is completely contained.

If you opt for very tall glass pool fencing, and especially one with an enclosure overhead, you might also have the glass tinted. This can offer some shade around the pool area, something to consider if you live in a hot climate with lots of bright, direct sunlight and if you don't have shade trees on your property.

Lighting

If you enjoy your home's pool at night, you should consider how a fence will respond to your selected lighting fixtures. A dark mesh or chain link fence may simply absorb that light, making it even darker around the pool area. This can actually make it unsafe for swimming! A glass pool fence will help to reflect that light and even spread it across the front of the glass panels so that the home's pool area is bright and attractive and safe for a night-time swim.
